The brains of men and women aren’t really that different, study finds

In the mid-19th century, researchers claimed they could tell the sex of an individual just by looking at their disembodied brain. But a new study finds that human brains do not fit neatly into “male” and “female” categories. Indeed, all of our brains seem to share a patchwork of forms; some that are more common in males, others that are more common in females, and some that are common to both. The findings could change how scientists study the brain and even how society defines gender.

So in the new study, researchers led by Daphna Joel, a behavioral neuroscientist at Tel Aviv University in Israel, tried to be as comprehensive as possible. Using existing sets of MRI brain images, they measured the volume of gray matter (the dark, knobby tissue that contains the core of nerve cells) and white matter (the bundles of nerve fibers that transmit signals around the nervous system) in the brains of more than 1400 individuals. They also studied data from diffusion tensor imaging, which shows how tracts of white matter extend throughout the brain, connecting different regions.

The team found a few structural differences between men and women. The left hippocampus, for example, an area of the brain associated with memory, was usually larger in men than in women.

To accommodate this overlap, the researchers created a continuum of “femaleness” to “maleness,” for the entire brain. The male end zone contained features more typical of males, and the female end zone contained the version of the same structures more often seen in females. Then, the team scored every individual region-by-region to find out where they fell on that male-to-female continuum.

The majority of the brains were a mosaic of male and female structures, the team reports online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Depending on whether the researchers looked at gray matter, white matter, or the diffusion tensor imaging data, between 23% and 53% of brains contained a mix of regions that fell on the male-end and female-end of the spectrum. Very few of the brains—between 0% and 8%—contained all male or all female structures. “There is no one type of male brain or female brain,” Joel says.

Walnuts Can Slow Down Cancer

A small amount of Walnuts a day can slow the growth of tumours by reducing blood supply to the tumour, noticeably slowing down its growth.

Black walnuts are American natives, but English walnuts have become one of the most popular nuts in the United States. Although all nuts fit into a cancer-preventive diet, walnuts are most studied for cancer. They contain the omega-3 fat – alpha-linolenic acid – which can make walnuts more susceptible to becoming rancid. That’s why you won’t find them in most commercial nut mixes.

Walnuts contain Omger-3 fatty acids and they can help slow the spread of cancer tumours.

Doctor Christos Mantzoros of Harvard Medical School carried out a first of its kind study to observe the impact of walnuts on micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNA), which control how genes mold to environmental factors.

‘Our research demonstrates that a walnut diet causes significant changes in the expression profile of miRNAs in colorectal cancer tissue.’ said Doctor Mantzoros.

Compounds in walnuts cause more Omega-3 fatty acids to assemble in tumour cells, he added.

Researchers fed a group of mice with 57gram of walnuts per day for humans and second group of mice was fed a controlled diet without walnuts.

After 25 days researchers found out that, mice with walnuts in their diet had miRNA that affects cancer cell swelling, blood supply and rapid increase.

The tumours of mice were fed with diet consisting of walnuts were found to have 10 times the amount of total Omega-3 fatty acids compared to the mouse that were fed with controlled diet with no walnuts.

.However, the studies were conducted on lab animals the results may vary in the case of human subjects.

The study published in the Jouranl of Nutritional Biochemistry.

Bowel cancer or colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the world and after lungs cancer it is the second leading cause of death in Western Countries.

In Birtian 41,581 people were identified with bowel cancer in 2011 and in the coming year 16,187 people died from the disease.

In US, the American Cancer Society estimated that there will be 132,700 new cases of bowel cancer in 2015 and it will cause 49,700 deaths.

Does New Theory Fleck Lost City of Atlantis? |Nayab Khan

atlantis-lost-city-ruins

Atlantis is a fictional island mentioned within an allegory on the hubris of nations in Plato‘s works Timaeus and Critias, where it represents the antagonist naval power that besieges “Ancient Athens”, the pseudo-historic embodiment of Plato’s ideal state (see The Republic). In the story, Athens was able to repel the Atlantean attack.

Athanasius_Kircher's_Atlantis

Atlantis is a legendary “lost” island subcontinent often idealized as an advanced, utopian society holding wisdom that could bring world peace. The idea of Atlantis has captivated dreamers, occultists and New Agers for generations.

Unlike many legends whose origins have been lost in the mists of time, we know exactly when and where the story of Atlantis first appeared. The story was first told in two of Plato’s dialogues, the “Timaeus” and the “Critias,” written about 330 B.C.

The Word “Atlantis”

maxresdefault

A legendary island in the Atlantic Ocean west of Gibraltar, said by Plato to have sunk beneath the sea during an earthquake.

Type the word “Atlantis” into Google and 120 million results pop up. Like El Dorado or Shangri-la, the legendary sunken city of Atlantis hovers on the horizon of our imagination, tantalizing, mysterious, unreachable.

Author Mark Adams explains why he thinks Atlantis may have been off the coast of Morocco; how an Irishman created the world’s largest database of Atlantis lore; and how the parting of the Red Sea, in the biblical story in Exodus, may be connected to Atlantis.

It was Plato’s “Critias” that set people off thinking that Atlantis actually existed.

Though today Atlantis is often thought of as a peaceful utopia, the Atlantis that Plato described in his fable was very different. In his book “Frauds, Myths and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology” (McGraw-Hill, 2013) professor of archaeology Ken Feder summarizes the story: “A technologically sophisticated but morally bankrupt evil empire — Atlantis — attempts world domination by force.

As propaganda, the Atlantis legend is more about the heroic Athens than a sunken civilization; if Atlantis really existed today and was found, its residents would probably try to kill and enslave us all. It’s clear that Plato made up Atlantis as a plot device for his stories because there are no other records of it anywhere else in the world. There are many extant Greek texts; surely someone else would have also mentioned, at least in passing, such a remarkable place. There is simply no evidence from any source that the legends about Atlantis existed before Plato wrote about it.

6 Clues to the Location of Atlantis

Plato:

Plato was a philosopher and mathematician in Classical Greece, and the founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world.

In modern times, the location of Atlantis has been the subject of great debate. In recent years, the number of locations chosen for that fabled land has reached some kind of critical mass bordering on the absurd.

where did Plato say that Atlantis once stood? He gives us several clues.

  1. Atlantis was a large island. This eliminates the Sahara, South America, Antarctica, the Irish Shelf and the North Sea continental shelf as candidates for Atlantis. None of these were islands twelve thousand years ago.
  2. Atlantis was beyond the Pillars of Heracles (today’s Strait of Gibraltar). This eliminates Sardinia, Corsica, Crete, Thera, Cyprus or any other location in the Mediterranean.
  3. Atlantis was in the Atlantic Ocean (the “true” ocean beyond the Mediterranean which Plato described as merely a lake with a narrow entrance). This eliminates Indonesia and any other locations outside of the Atlantic Ocean.
  4. Atlantis succumbed to a violent cataclysm and was swallowed by the sea.
  5. Atlantis was as large as Ancient Libya and Asia Minor combined. This is rather inexact, but in rough figures it would be equivalent to a body of land between one and two times the size of Texas (the largest state in the contiguous United States).
  6. The closest portion of Atlantis faced a region known as Gadira (a region in southwestern Spain, surrounding the city of Cádiz, the oldest European city on the Atlantic coast). This eliminates the South Atlantic and the recently publicized Spartel Island (Spartel is too close to Gibraltar to face Gadira, it succumbed far too slowly over thousands of years and it was far too small).
